Tips on How To Lose Your Spouse is the debut novel of local author Mathew Walker, who lives in South Anston with his wife Anna and two children.
Despite the title, there are (sadly?!) no recommendations in this book for how to successfully lose your partner; rather it is a novel that takes you on a journey from Sheffield to the fictitious island of Melas, where events start to take a turn.
You have a clumsy, self-deprecating, husband who suffers from anxiety trying to find his wife who has gone missing, while juggling his childcare responsibilities. The wife is a more determined, assured character, navigating her way through a sexist world. As the story progresses, the tone changes from comedy to horror/thriller.
The story is written from two perspectives. It starts with the frantic struggle of the husband attempting to discover what has happened to his wife, then shifts to the story of the wife, where we discover the same events from her perspective. The island accommodates a supporting cast of strange inhabitants – some helpful, some not so helpful, some evil!
How To Lose Your Spouse is a fantastic read that will suitably transition us from summer through to autumn.
